My first memory of a velvet trend was in 6th grade so the mid-nineties. Velvet made a huge comeback this year in the SS’17 collections. My favorite was in Victoria Beckham presentation with pastel coloured velvet midi-skirts. Generally velvet is always in season around the holidays for cocktail parties, loafers, smoking jackets – but this is the first time I’ve seen the fabric, which is usually considered a fall and winter staple, used for spring design.
Victoria Beckham’s collection used beautiful pleating, a spring colour palette and created a beautiful midi-length skirt which is versatile, and practical for spring. Pairing a lighter weight cotton or silk floral print blouse with a pastel coloured skirt is a fun way to try this trend on for spring ’17.
Another collection that had a beautiful velvet dress was Valentino’s FW’16 collection. You may remember Blake Lively wearing a beautiful mustard yellow coloured velvet dress to Cannes this past summer. The mid-length and sleeveless designs makes the velvet season appropriate for summer or spring. Paired with gorgeous heeled sandals this sumptuous fabric can easily walk into your spring or summer wardrobe. I think velvet will continue to be a staple material for the holidays but only time will tell for how popular it will be in spring.
